Melatonin is what the brain releases when night falls to make us sleepy. People like me and you who spend or have spent many years staying up late have reduced our body's response to it naturally so we have to supplement it from time to time to get back on track. People who live in Alaska have very poor response to it from the 24 days during summer.

Bad idea if you're trying to grow. The body only releases GH and starts the healing process after you reach level 4 of REM. Drugs like Ambien, Unison and any other sleeping drug prevent the body from reaching level 4 REM. As a matter of fact, you only reach level 2. Drugs for sleeping are not a good idea if you are training hard and trying to grow because you wont heal.
