Need help in getting letters of recommendation

I am under the impression that one can get letters of recommendations from public officials such as Senators, Legislators, Mayors, Sheriffs, etc. without personally knowing them.

What I do not know is how to go about asking for the letter.

The reason I ask is that I am in the process of putting together a packet for a specific program in the military. The letters of recommendation really help beef up the application.

I've always been under the impression that a letter of reccomendation can be from anyone. BUT, it's in bad taste to get one from a family member or friend.

An employer is usually a good choice.

You can start by going to your state gov website, which is your state followed by.gov. Example: Ohio.gov They should have links to your state Govenor, legislators, senators there. If you can get contact lists, you should have a formal letter prepared to email them in which you can explain your concerns plus your achievements. If a phone # is listed thats even better, as you can call and talk to their secretary which should be able to assist you in a letter of reccomendation from them. I would also stop by your local municipal building and go to the mayor's office the secretary should also be able to help you in this and he or she might be able to talk to you if they are available. Your Police departement should not be far from there. Talk to dispatcher and they may be able to setup an appointment with the Chief. They are usually glad to help out in such matters. Same with the fire department. Just make sure you have all the data with you, such as dates, schools, degrees etc.
