O2 -- I would not care about a ring at all. As a matter of fact, if my husband's mother and grandmother before did not pass down the ring I have -- I would not have one.
I would have just been very happy with a ring that he picked out himself that was in a style I liked -- no stone necessary.
As a matter of fact, my husband's wedding band was just two key rings welded together .... there is a romantic story about it...but that meant something to us.
Until my best buddy stepped in and insisted he would copy it in platinum for us -- we could not have afforded a nicer ring -- but also the key rings had a special meaning and there was nothing else we liked more. Now this new ring looks like the double key rings -- and because my best friend made it -- it has even more sentimental value to my husband and me.
So - to me, if she insists on a ring of "value" -- he may wish to reconsider the girl IMHO. It is about the sentiment - not the money/value/brag factor.
