LMAO, you dont know how true that is.
I have one of my trainers or myself run through an in depth orientation of all the equipment and put them on a progarm for free when you become a member, still people have to be shown the same thing over and over and over.....and they think you're rude if you say I'm busy at the moment, you know how to use the machinery.......
dealing with the idiosyncrocies of the general public is tough to say the least!

hey thnx for answering all my questions. good deal man. I'll prolly have some more for you if you don't mind, but I just wanted to say thanks.
So is that what your wife wanted to do also as a occupation or did she just kind of fall into it because it's what you wanted to do? That's cool your wife is your partner, I don't think you could have a better one. brothers and other relatives might be harder to work with.Yours In Sport,

No prob bro, ask me anything you want.
My wife did all the books a billing for a hospital in her last job and the same for a lumber co. before that.Plus having went through several courses in money managment ......so naturally she is responsible for the better part of our bookkeeping, its a piece of cake compared to what she is used to doing.
the only thing we butt heads on is her trying to make my gym all frilly and shit.....not going to have it, classes is as far as i let it go lol.
the only people that have been to my gym from this board is Inkman and DragonMona..... if you want there perspsective of my place feel free to ask them.....they are good people.
maybe some day i'll close this place down and have a FG holiday and let all you crazies tear it up.........someday

You have to have a way with words.....I suggest a persuasion class it will help you get people on your side. I would say the only advantages of having a BA(In this situation) is the people you can meet in a college program(your going to have to market yourself, be out going and express an interest). Through internships and just getting to know professors and classmates, you are bound to run into some good people that can help you. I mean people are going to college with same goal in mind, to make cash with their degrees. Just become a sponge and take in all the advice you can and then try to apply it the best way possible. Sucessful people just find a way to get it done.

most all of these business's had money, knew their product or service, and had a great skill,
The No. 1 Reason small businees's fail is due to lack of sales.
Owners want to do the work, yet, they hate to sell and promote.
Opening it, is a matter of money, keeping it open is a matter of sales.
Most folks have negative impressions of sales etc., don't know what their doing and shy away from it, and thus they have failed buisness's.
Try to learn about it if you can.
Good Luck
Just remember bro, we were talking about "gyms" not business in general.

js,
Improper planning and research leads to many things, mostly being in the wrong place at the wrong time and not being able to SELL anything.
I'll take a stab at something.
Most successful way to sell a product is through PERSONAL REFERRALS.
I don't know Nate, at all, and not familiar with his posts, yet just by reading would venture a GUESS on a few things.
1. He's motivated by a passion.
2. Loves money = in his mind lot's of personal and professional freedom
Because of those two things above, ( and have not idea what he does for promotions, or advertising etc. ) , gonna bet that when a client walks in the door he caters to them to where they feel great about themselves. Plus, he is probably their a majority of the time and continues with this golden service no matter how trivial or dumb these folks requests get.
Because of all that most likely alot of his growth comes from PERSONAL REFERRALS. Happy clients recruiting others.
How many gyms have we all gone too where the owner, or staff are very arrogant, uninterested, and sometimes down right rude.
How long do we stay.
Also, by his posts he clearly states he FEARS losing money. Thus he figured out real quick how NICE and CARING he is has a bottom line effect on sales.
Yet, again, could be wrong.
And too clarify a gym is a business, lights don't stay on unless you pay the bills, bills don't get paid without revenue, revenue never comes without sales. That never ever changes for any business, no matter how big or small.

hey trip, your a trip
who gave you the key to get inside my head lol
you hit the nail on the head bro, i treat my members like they're family and instruct my staff to do the same, above all a gym is a very intimadating place to be especially if you are out of shape....i do my best to take people under my wing until they settle in and become another fixture in the house so to speak. One of my best tools is being able to read people extremely well and quick.....that in itself is an invaluable tool, and who else to make you feel comfortable and at home than the owner himself.
another good thing that i'm able to do is remember just about everyone by their first name.....its really helps when i have a member who left and has come back to give it another shot...especially women, it really matters to them.
i give all the guys nicknames too.....makes em feel like they're back in highschool lol

nate,
Lot's of hard earned expereince, education and research.
And above all, they don't pay me to be wrong, I only get paid when and if I'm right, lol
And trust me, you don't want to be paid to get inside of peoples heads and be wrong, that's way to drama filled and dangerous, j/k
got the same thing going, nick name everyone cause for the life of me can't remember first names
Oh, by the way, which all goes back to my first post....ala
COMPASSION
When someone knows you care, you recieve same treatment back, ( for all intents and purposes, most of the time )
And nate, thanks for the compliments
