A 'premade' engagement ring vs. a ring where you buy the mounting separately from the diamond should always be the same price. The actual act of setting the diamond with all the finishing work associated takes no longer than an hour. So with that in mind, keep shopping if your seeing a huge price discrepancy.

Also diamonds do not have the largest retail markup of retail products, and they don't even in the specific jewelry market itself. The promotion of diamonds with independant grading reports have made price shopping relatively easy for the consumer.

    My suggestion is this.

1.) Look online for prices, diamond parameters, styles of engagement rings, etc...

2.) Talk to other people. Find a reputable local establishment to deal with. Most are more than happy to service a ring they have sold you for either nothing, or a nominal charge. Many can order you a specific style you like as well.

3.) When you finally do buy a diamond, buy one with an independant grading report. G.I.A. sets the standards in diamond grading. In fact the diamond grades we currently use were established by the G.I.A.

4.) Don't hesitate to ask a lot of questions. It's your money after all.
