Former world champion boxer **** Fenech will undergo surgery today after his face was slashed with a broken bottle during an attack in Sydney's south overnight.
The 39-year-old from Five Dock in Sydney's inner-west was taken to hospital after he was set upon by four men at Brighton-Le Sands in Sydney's south about 10pm (AEDT).
Police said the former boxer was at Grand Parade, where he had been dining with his family, when a blue sedan pulled up.
He began speaking to four men inside the car, who jumped out and attacked him, police said.
Fenech suffered a deep cut to his jawbone in the attack and was taken to the Prince of Wales Hospital.
Fenech's wife Suzee said the former world champion would undergo specialist surgery today.
"Hopefully he will come out looking like **** Fenech again," Ms Fenech said.
She said her husband had been wearing a white singlet at the time of the attack, which was covered in blood.
Ms Fenech said she had not recognised the attackers, but had managed to record the car registration, which had been passed onto police.

Ms Fenech said the family, including the boxing legend's mother and the couple's two daughters aged 7 and 9, had shared a meal at the Enigma Greek restaurant, as a belated New Year's Eve celebration.
They had returned from a family holiday to Thailand the night before.
Ms Fenech said the couple's daughters had been driven home from the restaurant only moments before the attack.
Earlier today, Fenech told Channel Nine he hoped to face his four attackers in court.
"I saw a guy with a bottle that he just cracked me with on the side of my face," Fenech said.
"A part of my face is still just hanging off."
Fenech said he did nothing to provoke the attack.
"I was just sitting down, I did nothing to them," he said.
Police said the four men got back in the car and sped off.
"I just hope the police give me the opportunity to face these guys off one time face-to-face," Fenech said.
"All my boxing career I've remained pretty unmarked and now I'm going to have a nasty scar on my face."
