Studies from this and other laboratories have shown that the erectile response in the rat is dependent on testosterone. After a period of castration lasting 1 week, there is about a 50% decrease in the magnitude of the erectile response when expressed as the intracavernosal pressure relative to mean arterial pressure. If the castrated animals were treated with testosterone or dihydrotestosterone the erectile response was fully maintained
