Actually, from what I've heard. If the mother is HIV+, the baby has a 50/50 chance of also having HIV. Most of these babies are born via C-section, as there's a good chance the baby can catch HIV during the birthing process.

Hmmm.. From what I understand, the placenta works as a bit of a filter. Not everything in Momma's bloodstream makes it into babies. BUT, the placenta wasn't really designed to block virus's... so it kinda works for some (like HIV), works not at all for others (like Hep B).
