Just for fun i'll describe some protein metabolism for ya's. It might be interesting to some and it helps me review.
during protein metabolism an amino group (NH2) is taken off an amino acid and combines with alpha ketogluterate to form a ketoacid and glutamate. The ketoacid can be transfered to the krebs cycle to make glucose.
Glutamate then combines with another amino acid which gives off another amino group to form glutamine and another ketoacid. The glutamine is sent to the liver where glutamine and an alpha ketoacid will provide 2 glutamate molecules.
The fate of glutamate: glutamate gets broken down into carbomoyl phosphate by losing an NH4 and the combination of NH4, CO2 and ATP by the enzyme carbomoyl phosphatase.
The other glutamate molecule combines with oxaloacetate and the enzyme aspartate amino transferase to form aspartate and alpha ketogluterate.
carbomoyl phosphate and aspartate enter the urea cycle and end up getting excreted in urine.
All of this happens when there is a negative nitrogen balance in the body.
