It's been a while...let's hear your stories about the craziest thing you've ever seen in the gym. Wether, it's the guy grunting and yelling like an idiot, to the dude who shat his pants going for that last squat...or the guy you saw loose a finger when the weight stack fell on it. Let's hear them stories....
My story: This happened almost 2 years ago now. I workout at my local YMCA. The gym is on the 2nd floor and 1 side has huge sloped out windows overlooking the pool at about a 45* angle. You can basically lie face down on the glass and look straight down at the pool below.
I had finished my workout and was just wrapping things up with a little cardio. When doing cardio I like to watch the kids in the pool (some of their dives are hilarious). So I'm sweating away on the bike when I notice this kid start loading weight onto the bench press bar beside me. I watch as he throws on 2 45lb plates and think to myself "Damn he's tougher than he looks". Then the kid nearly floored me by putting on another 2 45lb plates. So then I start thinking "I know how this is going to go... 2 reps of very shitty form". But the tough guy wasn't done yet... he then throws on 2 25lb plates....for a grand total of 275lbs includeing the bar.
So I'm watching this kid thinking.. no way he's going to do this...if he does more than like 4 reps of decent form, he's outlifting me! When I look back at it...It was impressive that he even managed to un-rack the weight.
So yes you guessed it.. that kid had about 2x as much weight on there as he could handle. And that weight came crashing down on him. I actually got distracted by a hottie walking by, but that "Ugh" and whoosh of air told me all I needed to know....
I got up to give this kid a hand and that's when it happened! Before I could get to him, the kid turned and kinda threw the weight up and off to his side... and right through the glass window!! The bar and weights went through the window, and crashed down to the pool deck about 12 feet below.
At first I was horrified. The pool was busy and I was certain that there was going to be badly hurt children. But a few seconds of surverying told me that luckily no-one had been hurt. That weight bent the bar all to hell and smashed a few tiles... but those were the only victums. What a mess, glass all in the pool, children crying, Upset and angry parents...
That's when I got angry... luckily the gym staff kicked him out and revoked his membership. Havn't seen him since.
