This is my take on it:

1. They sell your email address to bulk lists for spam
2. They sell your home address for spam
3. After your free subscription ends, they automatically renew it and send you a bill for the next two years or whatever, which you can cancel, but most people won't go thru the trouble of cancelling it, they will just pay it.

But still, not a bad deal if you don't mind span and you cancel the renewal.

-In the 6 years of getting free magazines, I never once got a bill. When the subscription is up, it's done with.


-I never received more "spam" then usual. Mail volume is still
the same, no change.


-I always put down a "fake" email address whenever offers like these appear. Rule of thumb, don't list your real email addresses when you don't have to.


-And as for the reason why Magazine Companies give out free subscription, this info is from kingjohn who is in the industry:

Magazines offer free subs occasionally to:

1. Build and update their mailing lists and try to sell more profitable products like books and merchandise.


2. To meet the ratebase (number of subscribers+newsstand purchases) that they guarantee their advertisers. The bigger your ratebase, the more you can charge your advertisers. Generally speaking, magazines that have circulation problems do this type of promo. It is frowned upon though by advertisers. They would rather reach an audience that is involved with the magazines to the point that they pay for a subscription.
