Question about Geography maybe?

okay I was thinking about this & its maily for Got Gear, or anyone else who has an answer:

Why are people from the USA called americans? North America is made up of 3 countries: Canada, USA, & Mexico. So shouldn't everyone from each of those 3 countries be called Americans because they inhabit the continent of North America?

Because we are from the United States of America ... Mexico is part of latin america anyways, that's like saying a peruvian is american since they're from south america ....

you could say we're all north americans, but only people from the USA are just americans ... you're called by the country you live in ...

You are correct Keiser.

This contenent that Mexico, the US, and Canada all share is called "America".

Sorta like how you can call alot of different ethnic groups "Asians" because they come from the content of Asia.

It's something that confuses me all the time. I never know if I'm included when someone says "you americans". However, Canada and the US is so similar that 1/2 the time it doesn't matter anyway. However Mexico and the US is completely different.

I guess it's all in the context you use.. If you were to say "North American" or "American Culture" I'd probably think this included Canada. But if you start talking about "Americans" Or "The american people" then I'd probably assume that your only talking about US citizens.
