I from N.O. and lived in the city for 12 years and its a cool town but you really have to watch where you wonder because its layered with good and bad neiborhoods throughout the entire city!! You could be looking at huge antibellum mansions in the garden district uptown and then go like two blocks and be in slums. Bourbon St. is a little overrated. Their are tons of other cool places to see,but if its your first time, you probably would want to hit The french quarter. Theres always the aquarium of the americas and the Imax, you could take a nightime voodoo tour through the quater or a swamp tour. There lots of gambling on the boats on the Mississippi river. You could tour the garden district or visit all the huge gothic above ground tombs at some of the oldest cemetaries in the country. Plus there is tons of cafes, shops, etc. for just shooting the shit and of course, night life like you would not believe!! I just recently moved to a city about 40 miles out of N.O., but still visit all the time!! Anyway, have fun and take lots of pics, bro!!

There are alot better places to go spend your money. New orleans has a high crime rate, the city is dirty, and the hotel rooms in the french quarter are over-priced!

---- Stay out of the projects (not hard to do).
----The Quarter is dirty, but it's not like there's loose trash all over the freakin place.
----Sleep somewhere near by.....there trillions of average places to stay all around.

I forgot to mention.....you could go East of New Orleans for one good visit -----> Jazzland theme park. Now owned and run by Six Flags and with new rides. It's like 15-20 minutes East of the Quarter right off the highway (just before getting into Slidell).

Well, the only thing you'll notice is less people. It's not nearly as bad as it is down there during Mardi Gras etc. All the same stuff is available and besides, mardi gras season is pretty miserable with the intensity of the crowds.....but on any given weekend during nice weather, you'll have the same sort of fun in the bars/clubs as you normally would. But the places you'll find the local hotties will be at the local bars and clubs in the surrounding areas of the city/Quarter There are some really pretty local girls running around in some of these local places - rather than ON Bourbon St Some of the places are expensive and the others are average, some are shady (some drugs), some are not.

As far as your question though.....no, it's not like the city shuts down on the off seasons of Carnival and stuff. You'll have more room to get around (park/walk/see) since its not Mardi Gras anyway

I lived there for 4 months. didn't draw a single sober breath. the French quarter is a must to see, but you'll have a better time a couple of blocks off Bourbon st. and spend less. It's something you don't want to miss, even if you never go back. Love the food...crawfish pie, all the different recipes for red beans and rice, fresh grilled tuna sandwiches for lunch...I went back last year and stayed sober..discovered a whole different and delightful town
There is no substitute for experience......
