Is High Intensity Cardio More Effective Than "Regular" (Low Intensity) Cardio?

Is an apple healthier than an orange? Is it better to have a maple tree or an oak tree in your front yard?

Seriously, there is no such thing as superior cardio. It is a very subjective topic. Some people would like to argue about things being superior - for a number of reasons. Some trainers are comfortable with a method and therefore don't want to stray outside of it. Some people find it is easier to sell a system if they keep it simple, so they will sell you on one idea of cardio. Some people spend too much time looking at the nuances - the details - i.e. what happens during training and don't take in the bigger picture of everything else going on.

Different forms of cardio serve their purpose. You can lose fat using both moderate intensity and high intensity cardio. In fact, if you are looking to kickstart fat loss, then chances are your issue is not the exercise you are doing, but nutrition. While it is easier to change the exercises or swap the cardio, it is nutrition that people have the hardest time sticking with but is often the key element that is keeping them from breaking through. You can achieve much more fat loss by manipulating your nutrition than you could your cardio. For example, simply trimming off an ounce from a portion of meat at each meal would save you more calories over a week than adding a full 30 minutes of high intensity cardio!

If you are compressed for time, high intensity will burn more calories in a shorter period of time and will also continue to burn calories afterwards. In this since, it is a great form of cardio. On the other hand, it is high impact and places more stress on your joints and musculature than moderate cardio.
Find cardio you enjoy. Find cardio you will stick with. Find cardio that fits your schedule. Find cardio that you can go all out and feel like you've accomplished something. Find cardio you have no problem thinking about doing the rest of your life because when it comes down to it, if you are doing this just to reach a target weight, I'd hang up the towel now. I've seen that - even been there, done that - and there is no such thing as "maintenance" - people gain it back and then some. If, however, you are treating this as a lifestyle change and something you will commit to beyond simply reaching an ideal weight, then you don't have to worry about if there are 5% more calories burned or this or that because it's not a race - it's a new way of living and the healthy body will come.
