  • Richard Simmons

So has he went all his life without any formal certification. As in personal training, physical therapy, etc?

I was just wondering about it, so I read up on him a little and he majored in Arts at FSU. But I couldn't find anything about physical fitness education.

There's no mandate, what-so-ever, on any of the health guidance or training that he's done throughout life?

I'm not fukin with Richard,lol..I know nobody gives a shyt about him, but I'm just wondering if anyone knew of him having any formal education or training. I'm not knocking him for not having it either. He's slimmed some folks up, and cried with the biggest of them. From what I read though, he just wanted to get slim and wanted to help others get thin, so he opened a gym targeting that demographic. Because when he moved to Beverly Hills, and was waiting tables or whatever, he just saw fit people and gyms for "already fit people"...whatever... More power to him educating himself.

The thing I'm wanting to know: Is certification federally mandated?

That's the thing. From what I read last night, you must have some certification/degree, or something to train someone in the U.S. Anyone in the U.K. can call themselves an expert. But we're not there. How has he gone so far for so long? I guess if you open a gym, then that's credential enough in America???

I know someone who is training a someone--maybe a couple people-- he doesn't have a certification. I wonder if maybe a degree in that area would suffice?

You have all the certification and knowledge you need to get started GT. Yes your degree is worth way more than most personal trainer certs out there as far as giving you credibility. But, peeps like to see certified on your business card. For that any old cert will do. But honestly, I think you could put BS in Exercise science from major university on a card and that will be more than enough to train people. Plus you kno w Im going to tell everyone I know to hire you. Personal trainers should hire you to train them...heh heh...hey buddy we gotta get the gloves on and pound some leather soon!

                        Exactly!
There is no law or requirement for a trainer to have a certification or a degree of any sort.

Most of the trainers I know don't have one.
They may have had one at some time but no longer.

                        It's simply not necessary.

The only time it's required is if you are an employee of a large chain of gyms or some small boutiques or a med center - the med centers with gyms will usually require a degree.

But if someone were to have the drive and dedication to start their own business....no certification is required.

Heck - I don't have one and I train people everyday - well at least for a few minutes. LOL!!
I think I actually have 2 clients to train tomorrow afternoon until I hire a trainer.
One I just might keep for myself! LOL!

So "licensed & insured" could actually supersede "certified" on a business card, huh. but hell, "certified" is really a relative term anyway.
To folks needing training, allot of us here are more than "certified" to train them. More so than the kid at the gym that usually does it. Or the old fart that was certified 15yrs ago and hasn't trained, himself, in 15 years.
