  • Overtrained???

How often do you take time off from your training? How many weeks do you train before you take a week off?

Rest is just as important to your body as training and food. Your body needs time off to recover and grow. Too many times I hear the words over-trained used for people who just want an excuse to get out of the gym. However, over-train can really be a problem for the truly dedicated. Don't let yourself get so obsessed that you forget to take a week off from time to time.

There seem to be signs of over-training. I think these are typical symptoms:

    • Tired, drained, washed-out feeling, lack of energy
    • Sudden drop in performance
    • Can't sleep at night / Insomnia
    • Increased injuries
    • Persistent muscle soreness, general aches & pains
    • Pain in muscles & Joints
    • Immune system is off; increase number of colds / sore throats, etc.
    • Moody; irritability, depressed
    • Loss of motivation
    • Decreased appetite
    • Weight loss
    • compulsive need to exercise

For me, when I'm overtrained I notice increase in injuries first. Then comes the washed-out, drained feeling. From there it the other symptoms can vary. The main thing is to listen to your body, especially if you haven't taken any time off from training in awhile. I use to go any where from 6 to 8 months without taking a week off. Now I take time off more frequently, especially if I have injuries.

One full week, twice a year. Usually when I start noticing tendonitis in my elbows and knee pain.

I think it is time for a week's break for me. My sciatic and hip pain is just getting worse.

              Re: Overtrained???

I use to only take one week off a year too. Then a trainer helping me with my competition told me that is not enough. I learned to listen to my body and take off when I started getting too many injuries or a least one week every 6 months. Now I work in 12 week cycles, taking a week off every 12 weeks. Heck... after 20 yrs of training you realize that it doesn't hurt to take more than a couple of weeks off a year.

I do a deload week every 4 weeks and I take a week off whenever I'm feeling draggy. I find I need more time to recove in my 40's than I did in my 20's.

I take a week off every 8 weeks, that way it's planned and i'm not a bear to live with for missing workouts.

                    Re: Overtrained???

It really just depends with me. If I'm feeling extra beat up, I'll either do a light week or if it just doesn't seem to be enough I'll take a week off.

I can't take a week off or I'll go crazy. The most I've done is 4 days and I'm a basket case waiting to get back in.

And wait till you're in your 50's! I take 7 to 10 days off every 6 to 8 weeks, it has made a world of difference to my recovery. Prior to doing this i was always dealing with those annoying little injuries.
