  • when to use a belt

i know for the most part youre only supposed to be using a belt for lifts you do over your head....but i know for your own safety with high amounts of weight you should be also for squats and deadlifts but at what weight should you start to use one???

Re: when to use a belt

Depends on personal preference I think. For instance, I don't put mine on until after my warm ups to help strengthen my core muscles.

Re: when to use a belt

The only time I wear one is when I'm peaking for a meet around 4 or 5 weeks out, that's about it. I think too many people rely too heavily on their belts and then don't understand why their abs and lower backs are weak.

I use a belt when my low back is hurting...and on squats above 300, deads above 250. I don't use it for anything else

Re: when to use a belt

i always used a belt til i blew out a hernia on each side. my abs/core were very weak from depending on the belt. haven't used one since '93 and abs are stronger, low back is stronger, i'll never use a belt again.

Mainly because when I do military presses or any presses over the head it seems like I'm putting too much stress on my lower back. When I wear the belt this seems like it doesn't happen.

Re: when to use a belt

i wear mine for the last couple sets of squat and deads (over 275 and over 300)
i have used it for bb shoulder presses. like deno, when i get above 135, there's alot of tork on my lower back (seated) i maybe aching too much, but it helps with a belt on

Re: when to use a belt

Who told you that you should use it for over the head exercises? That doesn't make any sense to me. I ONLY wear a belt on heavy deads, that's it. When you support a joint externally, you weaken the joint. Even on heavy squats, NO BELT! I focus on form and breathing so I don't strain my gut. Of course, this is something that took years to develope, but now I dont' use a belt. The only time I use any support is when a joint is huring, say wrist, and I will only wrap the heavy sets until it get's better.

I must be one of those that rely too much on the belt because I even use it for heavy chest workouts. I always thought it helps against hernias. That's the reason I wear it so much. And of coarse lower back on some exercises.

i know years ago reading articles in muscle and fitness and such about a belt should be used on over the head exercises and very heavy weigh on squats and deads ... and that you should be focused on proper form form your deads and squats so you dont need a belt for most weight..... they just never said as to what was considered heavy weight
