  • Deadllift & Abs???????

Just have two questions I need help on.....

    1. What bodypart should I incorporate deadlift with back or legs?

    2. Being that almost all my workouts take 1hr to 1 1/2 hrs usually I have nothing left to do abs ever. Would it be ok to do abs everyother morning way before I do my normal workout? I just don't want to put my nervous system under to much stress, or cause any muscular hypertrophy (I think that's what they call it when you don't give your body time to rest and overwork yourself).

Help would be great! Thanks guys and gals......

I have a day dedicated to deadlifts. You can incorporate them on a leg or back day. Depends upon what style of deads your doing. Particle/Rack deads would be best on back days. As opposed to full deads on leg days with emphasis on hamstrings. (Style dependent... sumo gets more hamstring involvement vice block style that hits more quads.) Decision is all yours and is dependent upon what your split looks like?

As for abs, hit them on your off days before or after cardio. That's what I do.

Problem is I only have 1 true off day between the repeat of my routine. I know once a week isn't enough for abs.

Once a week is fine for abs - IMHO. Abs are like any other bodypart. They need rest and recovery. Are you using weights with abs?

          no weights yet.

I usually do 4 sets of all the following breakdowns....(all until failure)

          crunches - 34,30,28,24
          sit ups on a roman chair/hyper ex machine- 10, 10, 8, 8

Start adding weights... you'll only need to train abs once... maybe twice a week. What's your split look like?

What does your workout routine look like... your "split" on body parts... (i.e. Monday... chest/tri... etc...)

                  Re: Deadllift & Abs???????

That's what I thought you meant but I wanted to make sure before I sounded like a complete tard.

My breakdown is usually the following...

Day 1: Chest, Back, (includes shrugs)
                  Day 2: Bi's, Tri's
                  Day 3: Rest
                  Day 4: Legs, Abs
                  Day 5: Shoulders, Shrugs
Day 6: Sometimes rest or if I feel up to it I restart the routine and take a day off after Day 1. I mix up the breaks alot depending on how my body feels. It seems to work good because it is always a shock to the system if you aren't consistent with your days.

Problem is I think I need more ab time because once doesn't seem enough to me, and I couldn't possibly piggyback it to other workouts since I go all out in every session to the point of failure I have nothing left for abs. Plus I don't want to cheat other body parts by putting some energy towards abs. That's why I wondered if it was ok to say do abs in the morning every third day hours before my routine workout.

I also didn't want to do it on a day off because I've read many places that your body ie. nervous system needs a day of rest atleast once a week with no workout to recuperate itself. Otherwise you won't give your body time to grow if it's constantly working. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

                  Any suggestions?

What are you looking to get out of your dl's? Are you looking for power or just another good mass developer?

                      Re: Deadllift & Abs???????

                      Kind of both.

I'm having serious trouble getting the bar off the ground to do shrugs. Once the weight is up I can go for 15-20 reps. Also I have trouble gripping the weight for shrugs by the 4th set. I figured deadlifts would help that.

Plus I am looking to gain size. It seems everyone says it's a huge mass builder and that's my goal so I figured why not try and incorporate it into my workout.

                        Re: Deadllift & Abs???????

This is what I was doing prior to my shoulder injury:

                        Day 1: Chest
                        Day 2: Cardio/Abs
                        Day 3: Back
                        Day 4: Cardio
                        Day 5: Squat/Quad/Calves
                        Day 6: Cardio
                        Day 7: Delts/Traps
                        Day 8: Cardio/Abs
                        Day 9: Bicep/Tricep/Forearms
                        Day 10: Cardio
                        Day 11: Deadlift/Hamstring/Calves
                        Day 12: Cardio
Day 13: Start at Day 1 again.

This workout gives me plenty of time to recover - especially after hitting hard mass building exercises like squats, deadlifts, pullups, etc... Plus, I tend to carry to much b/f so the cardio days help keep the blubber off. This also allows me to train abs but only once per week.

                          Re: Deadllift & Abs???????

See my problem is I'm opposite. I have a high metabolism and have trouble putting on weight. If I go anymore than 7 days without working each body part, I'll not only lose my strength I gained, but I'll lose size too. I have tried very many routines and this is the one that's worked the best for me yet. I just need to find where to fit the abs & deadlift.

you should try a low volume workout, it may work better for you..i do my deads with squat day but that completes my workout for legs..so when you should place the deadlifts depends on the rest of the workout, its difficult to do squats and deads during the same day..so try them on back day..also for the grip, get some chalk
