  • cardio and intestines

After a heavy cardio session on an empty stomach I always get cramps in my intestines. They feel really filled with air and I have a lot of 'escaping air'. Air comes out up and down, meaning I have to fart a lot (pardon my language) but I also have to burp a lot.

Maybe a stupid question, but really an annoying problem though. Anybody knows how this happens and how I prevent it?

Does anyone know a medical board or website where you can ask this question?

Are you eating prunes before your workout?

I believe the problem probably lies in your pre-work out meal or drink.

Flatulence is caused when food does not break down completely in the small intestine and passes through to the large intestine not completely digested. Carbohydrates are the most likely to get through and cause flatulence. You are probably having difficulty with some type of carbohydrate. Your stomach may feel empty but you small intestine most likely is not.

Also, digestion pulls blood out of circulation (that’s why they tell you to wait 30 minuets after eating before going swimming) this alone can cause cramping. Heavy cardio will pull the blood right back, creating a bit of a tug of war for blood. If you are having trouble with a particular carbohydrate, this will worsen the problem.

I would look to change my pre-workout meal or the timing of that meal. Also, adding a couple of bulk fiber drinks like Metamucil throughout the day might help your digestive process.

            Good luck.

she said "on an empty stomach".
You are probably gulping down alot of air with the water you are drinking during cardio.

Right and I said - Your stomach may feel empty but you small intestine most likely is not.

Although you could be correct, she may very well be gulping down too much air.
