Re: smith machine
We have a gym at work, which I built and for which I acquired all the equipment. The original stipulation, supposedly for "safety" and "insurance" reasons, was "NO freeweights". I also had a limited budget. So, I got us a multi-station, selectorized weight stack setup. Then, while buying plates from a guy for my home gym, I ran across an older commercial smith machine for sale, cheap. I talked the boss into 'permitting' it and giving me the $ for it.
So, I use it for damn near everything when I work out at work. I weighed the bar, and found that with the counterweights it weighs 27 lbs. So I just consider that when I'm training and add a 10 on each side.
Obviously it's not the same as a barbell, but I deadlift; squat; barbell hack squat; barbell row; bench press; standing military press on the smith. All very effective.
