COUNTY—A 19-year-old Gulf Coast Community College student was arrested on August 2 after dozens of vials of anabolic steroids were found in his vehicle, according to Sheriff Steve Whidden of the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO). MacGregor Duke Monroe, 19, of Fort Myers, was charged with possession of a controlled substance without a prescription after Sheriff Whidden found the vials during a routine traffic stop.
According to Sheriff Whidden, Monroe was driving down S.R. 80 with an expired Lee County tag on his license plate. When Sheriff Whidden pulled him over, Monroe explained that he had already received a ticket earlier in the week because of his tag. Sheriff Whidden proceeded to ask if anything illegal was in the car, to which Monroe replied there wasn't.
During the traffic stop, a K-9 unit was also present to assist Sheriff Whidden. Deputies walked the dog around Monroe's vehicle, however, the dog did not alert officers to anything illegal in the car. While the dog was walking around his vehicle, Monroe’s breathing became erratic, according to Sheriff Whidden, who said he noticed Monroe becoming agitated.
According to Sheriff Whidden, he was still suspicious of Monroe, though the K-9 unit was unable to detect anything illegal, and asked again if there was anything in Monroe’s car that he should not have.
“I knew something was in the car by the way he was acting,” said Sheriff Whidden. “That’s when he broke down and admitted that there were steroids [in the vehicle].”

Monroe was arrested and released on bail the next day.
