  • Carnitine Increase Sperm Count???

    Read this article:

Q: I saw a product recently advertised as a treatment for low sperm count. It contained carnitine. What is carnitine and can it increase sperm counts?

A: Carnitine is a vitamin-like compound responsible for the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the energy producing units in cells - the mitochondria. Carnitine can be synthesized in the body, so it is not officially listed as a vitamin.

Carnitine can not only increase sperm counts, but more importantly it also improves sperm function. Low carnitine levels have been linked to low sperm count and abnormal motility. The lower the carnitine content, the more likely a man is infertile. Carnitine supplementation (3,000 mg of L-carnitine daily for 4 months) has been shown to increase sperm counts and improve sperm motility. In one study, the number of ejaculated sperm increased by 20 billion; the percentage of motile sperm increased from 26.9% to 37.7%; the percentage of sperm with rapid linear progression increased from 10.8% to 18%; and the mean sperm velocity increased from 28.4% to 32.5%.

    Any opinions on this??
