  • Steroids and Hip problems?

    Hi guys,

Do any of you have any information on cases of hip problems directly linked to steroids?

Before I started juicing, I spoke to my Doc. About the only thing he warned me of that I wasn't already aware of was hip problems. Specifically blood flow to the hip bone. Apparently, it's rare, but a documented side effect which can eventually lead to pelvic joint problems and ireversable bone/joint damage. I'm not sure why bloodflow is restricted and why it only happens to these particular atreries.

I didn't think twice about it. I decided it must be pretty rare if none of the online bro's have mentioned. Maybe the doc was mistaken?

But thena while ago a member over at AR posted saying he was going to have to have hip surgery. The problem was restricted blood flow to the hip which made his bone weak and soft. It'd gotten so bad that the only fix was surgery. His doc blamed it on steroids.

So do any of you bros have any info on this topic?

      I don't think so..

From what I understand, the damage is permenant but the damage is only being done while steroids are being taken.

      A possibility tho..

Can be from leg lifts and also if you have gained a good amount of weight and held it for some time now carrying it around can be harder on parts of the body!

To detemine the androgenic effect of a steroid they normally weigh a muscle called the levator ani. This muscle basically keeps your guts from falling out your hips when you stand up.
If this guy did a bunch on heavy androgens, maybe his levator ani got bulked up enough and occluded the vessels passing through it.
Lowered blood supply will kill your bones, but I would think he'd have other problems first.
There are a whole bunch of wrestlers that have needed hip replacements (Superstar Billy Graham blames his on steroids) and a fair number of sports players as well. Maybe its the wear and tear, or maybe its the gear.

Remember Bo Jackson? Some critics have suggested what got gear is talking about was the case with his hip injury. I remember the routine tackle that led to a total hip replacement. Food for thought anyway. Try searching PubMed for steroids and avascular necrosis.

Dereck Sanders, a hockey star for the Boston Bruins in the 1970's
apparently went through this. He used steroids, believe, prescribed by doctors to help heal other injuries, stayed on for a while and ended being crippled, wheelchair bound permanently, and AS was believed to be the culprit.

                    Food for thought though.

And nox, cool answer, very informative.

I was watching that game when it happened and I have to disagree; that was no routine tackle. I cringed when I saw it because I knew something very bad just happened.
