Bro, when you go for like a max triple on the dead lift or squat you burn the oxygen in your muscles up real fast because of the strain and amount of musculature being used. when the oxygen burns up it makes you light headed, ever made a big lift on a compound exercise and saw stars and and felt dizzy aftewards . it's your body trying to get oxygen to the brain and muscles theres not quite enough to go around for a few seconds. The ammonia keeps you alert and keeps you from passing out. It's not going to help you much, if any in a training application. It is used mainly by powerlifters at meets when super heavy weights are lifted and bodies are pushed to the max. As for stupid to use it? It won't kill you and it keeps you from getting hurt by keeping you alert.
