  • Adipex

Anybody know much about this medication? It's prescribed for weight loss. From what I've read, it sounds like bad stuff. It has too many bad side effects. It works great during the month or 2 that it's taken, but once off, the person gains the weight right back. People also take it for energy, and sometimes end up addicted to it.

Anybody had experience with, or know more about Adipex?

    Re: Adipex

Awww, its Phentermine. OK, its pretty good from what Ive heard. Never tried it. Does elevate BP

Adipex is the brand name of the weight loss drug Phentermine, which is used as a short-term supplement to diet and exercise in the treatment of obesity.

Manufactured by Gate Pharmaceuticals, it is designed to release immediately, in contrast to other brands formulated for a slow release. Phentermine is one of two drugs in Fen-phen, and is approved by the FDA and available by prescription. Adipex is currently the most-prescribed weight loss drug in the United States.

Phentermine stimulates the central nervous system (nerves and brain), which increases your heart rate and blood pressure and decreases your appetite.

its an appetite suppressant, is prescribed for short-term use (a few weeks) as part of an overall weight reduction program that also includes dieting, exercise, and counseling.

thanks. Your description makes it sound better than what I had gathered.

Something else that I gathered from my "research" is that it's primarily prescribed to women, correct?

One thing that bothers me is why a doctor would prescribe a weight loss drug to someone that's only 5-7lbs over-weight. And, said person had just given birth. If you're thinking 5-7lbs isn't much for a pregnant woman, she didn't make it full term.(just to clear the air if that was a wonder.) I mean, shouldn't this drug be prescribed to the obese?

No doc on earth should give this to anyone who is on ly 5-7lbs over weight.

Nope.. It is an amphetamine. Not METHamphetamine but amphetamine nonetheless..

I work with a guy who is a complete fat ass.. knows nothing about dieting (even though I have tried and tried to help him) and he strolled into the doc's office and asked about it. The doc put him on those and he lost about 30 of the 320lbs he was carrying around after about three months. Well, three months later he is back to the same weight.

Hide and watch...people who are taking this stuff are going to have a good chance for a lawsuit when it is taken long term and it starts causing heart problems like phen phen.

NOTHING beats good old fashioned discipline and changing your eating habits.

            ^true that.

so that's flat out reckless to prescribe those things to someone that hardly has extra weight? That's what I figured.

Just wondering; who moved this thread? and why here?

              Re: Adipex

The typical garden variety MD doesnt know shit about how to deal with obesity so they just whip out a pad and write a script. Its the easy way for them. Then charge you $165 for an office visit.
Just the same way that they WRECKLESSLY prescribe pain meds and muscle relaxants for every little ache or pain. They dont know what else to do. Thats a fact!
