Does metformin have any place in one's arsenal?...say a young, naive person bought a bunch of blisters a few years ago without any knowledge on the drug...is it basically worthless or is there a certain time (off cycle, on cycle or whatever) where it could be of some use?

Well, diabetic drugs have been used like met and glucophage to prevent your body to produce insulin. If you keep your insulin levels down, you burn fat for energy and you lose weight. I would be very careful in using met. or any-other diabetic agent. You can achieve the same results through diet and cardio. Good Luck.

If you're using insulin then yes it can have its place. Alone, ehh maybe as a mild appetite suppressant at night. However, around 1500-2000mg is needed.
