Originally posted by YellowJacket Im not concerned with the 'story', Im more pissed that people's personal info. was on display? how'd that happen? once someone displays that, things will be decided.
Originally posted by Ripped Guinea Were there actual credit card numbers listed???????? Does anyone that has seen the list know????
The first and last four numbers were listed. However, this does not take away from the fact that someone has the complete number. It appeared as though they redacted the middle numbers with white-out or something prior to posting. Still, someone has the complete credit card number.
Guys and Gals I am not a computer security expert in anyway but I wonder if we should.be carefull clicking on such a link in the future. If you click on the link and go to the site does that not give them a record of your IP address and if you do not hide your IP address using something like Ghoust Surf would that not give them a link to finding out who you are. From there more of harrasement and invasion of privacy stuff could happen

No..
It'd give them the IP address of your ISP, not your PC.
Could narrow you down to a city and a few throusand people, but that's it. (unless they get help from your ISP).
RIP BigJim33 & GearedUp: You are sorely missed my friends.
Hindsight is always 20/20. But looking back it's still a bit fuzzy.

Guys - I have been a long time reader of this board and have gained invaluable knowledge from most of you so I wanted to try and return the favor on a subject I am an expert in. I work as an internal network engineer for the largest internet security company in the world. I attend a daily conference call with our company, the federal government and many other sources that work their butt off to keep all of you and your information secure. Let me tell you all a few things I know. Anything any of you do on the internet can be tracked if a government agency wants to. Any information you EVER submit over the internet is not 100% safe. Believe me when I tell you there are many more compromises of information than any of you know about. Let me also tell you there is no way in fucking hell what happened here involved any federal (or any other type) of government agency. They go after big boys only! and when they are after you, you wil never know it until they knock on your door with a search warrant and confiscate your computer and any other electronics they feel may be usefull to them (digital cams etc). Any legitimate agency of any type will NEVER disclose the information they are able to retrieve. We cannot even get the agencies to give us details when they make a bust. We get general answers like "we recovered financial data from an individual - the rest is classified" - and yes - if this had been done by any type of agency it WOULD be classified as at least secret - more than likely top secret - until after people are in jail and ready to stand trial. My take of what happened is someone was stupid enough to not destroy paper records and someone else was smart enough to get hold of them and use them to scare everyone. This happens all the time - any of you ever piss off an old girlfriend or roommate?
This is a very serious offense and in my opinion what needs to be done is someone whose information was posted needs to contact an agency called NIPC. They are the ones that would bust the person who posted the inforamation. They have the resources and power to find this individual. It is not difficult. Just the fact that they posted that information at all in the way they did tells me they are EXTREMELY stupid and know very little about how easy it is for them to get busted - and if NIPC investigates them they WILL go to jail - the feds are done messing around with people - they are cracking down HARD on people hacking information or causing other types of damage using the internet. I will do my best to provide better information - who exactly to contact (name, address, phone number) and post it here as soon as I can and I will be more than happy to provide any help I can.
At this point in time I would tell most of you to not worry too much - change your alias, cancel your credit card and get a new e-mail address. All things that are a pain in the ass but still easy enough to do. That is all you can do at this point in time.
Did anyone manage to save a copy of the website that contained all the information to their local hard drive? That would be invaluable in a possible prosecution. If any of you did - KEEP IT and please check back here. I will see what I can do and keep all of you informed through this site.
And thanks to all of you who are so active on this board - you do wonders for educating lurkers like myself.
Ip addresses are not even close to the only way for you to be tracked - and your ISP is not the only source that can track that - it goes much deeper than that and gets WAY confusing. Don't get paranoid though Nobody is going to go through that unless they have enough of a case to arrest you - they would pretty much need to be already investigating you. Posting on message boards and buying a FINA kit is NOT going to prompt an investigation. Write some malicious code that causes damage or try to break into a business, college, government etc computer and you WILL be watched. Nobody cares about you buying some oil, bottles and filters online for your personal consumption.
