Now, a growing number of young men are facing enormous social pressures to achieve "the body beautiful".
About 83,000 young Canadians between the ages of 11 and 18 are using anabolic steroids to improve their performance in sport and/ or to change the way they look. Most are young men.
Steroid users sacrifice a lot. Most steroids are bought illegally on the black market, where the drugs are often counterfeit and unclean. Steroids can cause breast enlargement and sterility, and can stunt a young man's growth. They can increase aggression and cause paranoia. Most dangerous of all, close to 7,500 adolescent users in Canada are sharing needles and vials when they inject steroids. They risk sacrificing their life to AIDS.
The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) and Health Canada are two concerned organizations that are acting now to make a difference. We're informing young Canadians about the dangers of steroid use, and we're enlisting your support. As parents, teachers, coaches and health professionals - as responsible people - we all play an important role in helping young men make healthy decisions.
