  • For those interested. Key points to being a good Personal Trainer.

    1) Looking the part - I don't care how much knowledge you have. Appearance in this field accounts for at least 50% of the game. Appearance definately doesn't mean you know shit but it definately helps in this field.

    2) Knowledge - Of course - You better know your shit. It's good to be well rounded in all aspects of the fitness world. Do they expect you to know EVERYTHING? No, but the more you know the better off.

    3) Personality - You may be smart and you may look nice but if you have a shitty personality good luck getting a lot of clients. In this field to be the best you have to be a people person. This job is not for the shy and non-outgoing. Well, if you want to do good at least.

    4) Sales techniques - You have to know how to sell. What you say also along with saying and analogies all combined with your look, knowledge and personality and you are good as gold.

Take it from me. I'm 22 years old and kickin some major ass personal training. I know this game inside and out.

Mike explain to me why most trainers do not understand this? I mean I really dont get it. I see some of the most bloated overweight bastards as personal trainers. It really kills me sometimes. What type of clients do you have? Are they mostly women or spread out?

While I would like to have a personal trainer/coach I in no way would want to be one. I know this because I took my sister to the gym with me for a week while she was here. She constantly bugged me to 'show her what she needed to do'. My god, I never heard so much whining and crying in my life! I dont know how you do it. Although the helping people aspect of the job has to be awesome. Thats the only reason I love my job.

Mostly "mainstream" types. Currently am not training any athletes but alot of different individuals of all ages. Mostly late 20 and early 30's though but all ages still. Right now I say I train 2-3 women than men. It's so funny the guys in the gym are all like, how come all the hot girls get personal training from you when they really don't need it. You get all kinds of comments. I now have finally built up a good reputation at my gym having only been there a few months. People seen me before as a built young nicelooking guy and alot of them assumed I was just some juichead that was looking to make extra money. Now they see I know my shit and see how many clients I actually get.

                  5. Get used to rejection. Even the best trainers get told no.

An personal training is not the glamorous training beautiful LA model types. most of my clients started off as overweight late 20's to 40's.

                    Agreed. Good point for 5.

As for clients I agree but lucky for me half the women clients I train are pretty and already in good shape. Just convinced them to kick it up a notch. Everyone can get better. There is no settling. We strive for more.

I Only trained my GF and that is it. But in a year she has gone from 160 to 137. From squating without weight too squating with 135 3X15. Her abs are the real story though. She is really cutting up.
