The trick is division of responsibility. You tell your client, "I'm responsible for everything we do in the gym and you are responsible for everything you do out of the gym. Don't waste my time in here by eating twinkies. If you eat twinkies and junk food and you don't get any result you make me look like a bad trainer and that messes with my livelihood. So, if you can agree to give it 100% I will take you on as a client."

Don't mess with flakey clients. I used to have these three ladies I trained for only $25/hr because they were dedicated and loyal. They busted their butts in and out of the gym. They ate perfectly and they made me look good. So, I gave them a discount so people would see them train with me all the time. I had more clients than I could keep up with for a while. Thats how you do it. You reward the ones who give it all so they stay with you. The ones who don't give it all you need to cut loose. There is nothing worse than a reputation as a bad trainer. Even if you know your stuff, a bad or lazy client will make you look bad. Cut em loose and move on.

You want to know the best way to get clients? You don't advertise in the gym, you don't walk around telling people what they are doing wrong, no, the best way is to do a drawing. Put a box at the check in desk that says "Win A Free 1 Hour Training Session". That will motha will be full in a couple days. Now, how many free sessions you want to give are up to you but if you do it right and really "WOW" the potential client you should land approximately 10 to 20% of the sessions you give away. So, do 20 free session and you should get 2 to 4 clients. Those 2 to 4 clients should double within 2 to 3 months if you are producing results. Then double again with good results.

One thing I found that made training easy for me was my desire to read as much as I could on fitness, esecially womens fitness. My first 4 years in the business were in Women's Only gyms so I truly had to know my shit because women are different than men. When the women saw that I was doing the same thing that they were reading, they gained confidence. I instantly had credibility because I was applying the same stuff they were reading. All I did was read it before them and play it off like "hmm, those people must have a spy in my gym" and then laugh or wink. They would see that I took a first hand interest in learning what I could to help them and they really appreciate effort. Women are watching, especially when you are the only guy in the gym. You act professional and you show a genuine interest and you gain their trust. Always be genuine, always.

                  Ahhhhhh, T-man, excellent excellent posts.

To Lead: First you must Understand.

If people feel they are understood by another, acceptance of new idea's suggestions, and directions are ten times easier.

So, the effort needs to be put in first by the trainer, and like T-man says, it compounds over time. The reward for the research etc. pays off in referrals, and they will come in bunces, yet, you gotta do the first part like T-man says.
