  • How to Send Money in the Mail

I've collected various points on sending money through the mail and have put them together so everyone can see how it should be done. There is no reason for you to have your hard earned dollars stolen through the mail.

    Don't

    - use a plain envelope
    - use a birthday card...a thick birthday card invites thieves
    - be cheap when sending money

    Do

    - wrap the money in something that is not "see-through"
    - get the express post envelopes for a few more dollars
next three were copy and pasted from frfghtr
    - Use the "Chinese Box" method: Make sure the cash is hidden three levels deep. Cash in an envelope is stupid (one little rip in the envelope gives the contents away). But cash in the back of a CD case, gift-wrapped, in an insulated envelope is smart. Three layers of protection from snooping eyes.

    - Use insulated envelopes: If you're sending 300 bucks in the mail, don't be CHEAP! Spend an extra 2 bucks on a thick, insulated envelope. Bubble wrap is nice but heavy insulated is better. the more sturdy the envelope is, the less chance it'll be ripped or destroyed and the contents exposed. Those who're just sticking a card or cash in a regular prepaid envelope and sending it off are taking a stupid risk. Better yet, stick the insulated envelope inside the prepaid one. Remember, 3 levels deep!

    - Use a decoy method: The CD case was mentioned above, but there are other decoy methods that people can use. Take 5 minutes with a sharp knife, and cut out the heart of one of your girlfriend's romance novels. Fold the cash, put it in the space, and tape the book shut in a couple spots with invisible tape. When your girlfriend asks you if you've seen her copy of "A Husband for Sale", play stupid. If you're not a good liar, use any other paperback book instead. Another decoy method is a magazine. I advise against using a porno or a muscle magazine (aka porno), since if the envelope is torn and the handler sees boobs he may just decide to take it home. Again, don't be CHEAP, go out and spend a few bucks on an issue of Martha Stewart Living. Then put the 20$ bills throughout the magazine, laid flat so they don't leave any telltale buldges. Again, tape the edges a bit so the money doesn't slip out and fall loose. AND put the magazine in an insulated envelope.

Good pointers Aragon. If and when I send cash I try to staple the cash on to the card this way it doesnt move.

Nice post, good tips. I'd also add that thanks to e-bay, video tapes ship very easily, and $$$ can be hidden inside the case

I find the Bday card is a good thick layer but I would not send it so it LOOKS like a Bday card...put the card in a plan envelope, that envelope in one of those large brown (buisness) type envelopes then put the whole pack in the express envelope. That gives you 4 layers of protection...
