Yes it is defiantly a joke. Just to get trace his IP the cop would have to subpoena his ISP. But before that they would have to get a judge’s signature and in order to do that they must prove he has done something illegal. OK after that the cops have traced the ip to a company they would have to get the company to give them more info. Most companies share an Internet connection. So after the company uped the info then they could contact the person. That’s a lot of trouble and time to bother with to ask some one why the looked at a certain site. Plus I think the company itself would have had a talk with the employee. There would be a better chance that the company finding out and revoking his Internet privileges or termination. Lots of companies reserve the rights to monitor electronic communication (phone, email, or internet access). IT”S A BAD JOKE!!!

I guess I didn't give enough info.
We both work at a major universty. The University police are part of the local police force. i.e. they aren't just rent-a-cops. Apparently, some law enforcement agency called the university police and said, "we have traced this IP to the university". The University police then followed up on that and traced it to my friend's computer at his desk. It was the University police who called him and wanted to know what he was doing on a board discussing illegal activity.
So, NO, it isn't a prank. There is no one but me who even knew he ever took steroids or visited EF. He was pretty secretive about it. He never got any gains either so it wasn't "obvious" that he ever used. At a university, they do not need a search warrent to come into your office and conduct a search. It's in the contract you sign when you apply for work there.Spidey is a fictional character. I do not use or condone the use of illegal drugs. Any references to steroids or other illegal drugs is purely for entertainment purposes and role-playing.

Real nice how a place of "higher" education teaches that you have no rights to privacy.
I understand that its not really proper to be doing such while on the clock though.
My favorite is work applications that concede that a question is illegal to ask and therefor is optional to answer with obviously no chance of employment inless answered!
That and a fire this high burns my *ss!

NOT true at all. They can trace any IP addy WITHOUT a judges order, trust me bro
But as I cop wouldn’t it be illegal to do this without a judge’s sig. Like an illegal wiretap would be thrown out in court.
Also many companies use a single gateway and it is protect by a firewall. If a cop cracks my firewall he has access to my LAN, Intranet, NAS. Now the cop has broken the law.

Either way it sucks for your friend he has done nothing illegal. However this may be unethical in the view of the university. They could give him a warning, suspend his internet right, or even fired. Have you ever agreed to any university terms of use.

This makes more since the University police could have a role in monitoring electronic connections since they have a direct link to the university. As far as an external police contacted them I think this is BS. Maybe a scare tactic. Possible the IT department has a protocol to escalate any possible issues to them.

I have been working there since 1995 and I can't remember all the fine print in the application so I don't know if I could be penalized or fired for visiting a website discussing illegal activity. I guess it would be smart for me to find out but I don't quite know how to go about that. I can't just call up and ask "Is it OK for me to visit a website that discusses drug use?" I am a bit suprised they haven't called me (yet). I spent way more time at the EF anabolic board then he did. He only went there a few times (at my urging) to learn a little more about anabolics. EF was my online home for over a year.
It kind of sucks for my friend because he wants to come back to work at the university and has a job offer. The university does background checks on everyone who applies for work there and I wonder if this will adversly affect his chances of being re-hired.Spidey is a fictional character.
