This is why so many Americans are confused when it comes to "eating healthy"
It all depends on your needs. If you are bodybuilding (trying to put on muscle mass, not just getting lean) you will need a lot of protein. Over 70% of the body that is not water is comprised of ammino acids. You will not find a person who has put on 20 pounds of muscle that has not consumed more that 1gr protein per pound of lean body mass.
The "health department" and FDA are not good sources of diet information.

Amen. Neither are most nutritionists. They are still being taught the benefits of high complex carb diets in school. Funny thing is many nutritionists are overweight.
They blame it on lack of time to exercise.
But with a good diet you shouldn't HAVE to exercise to remain thin.

When I was off from the gym for a year due to injury, I adjusted my diet accordingly. About .8-1.0 grams protein a day, minimal fat, moderate carbs. I stayed fairly lean but lost a lot of muscle. But I was still healthy.
If you want to know what to consume to be a bodybuider, ask a lot of bodybuilders.
