Gatineau police officer places first in finals of 2002 international strength competition

              DAVE ROGERS, OTTAWA CITIZEN

Gatineau police constable Hugo Girard, known for the past four years as Canada's strongest man, became the world's strongest man at a competition in Hawaii on the weekend.

Mr. Girard placed first in the finals of the 2002 International Federation of Strength Athletes in Maui. He beat rivals Svend Karlsson of Norway and Mariusz Pudzianowski of Poland, who placed second and third respectively.

The "World Superseries" strength competitions were held in Boston, Malaysia, Poland, Scotland, Finland, Turkey, Austria, Germany, The Netherlands and Hawaii.

Competitors had to do such things as carry two engine blocks suspended from a yoke and lift a 225-kilogram stone and two oxygen cylinders filled with concrete.

Other contests involved pulling a nine-tonne moving van, holding two 135-kilogram pillars and hoisting the rear end of a small car.

The athletes are big men, with an average height of six feet, three inches and a weight of 330 pounds. Mr. Girard is six-foot-two and weighs 356 pounds.

Some competitors have a powerlifting background and often practise the squat, the benchpress and the deadlift, three of the main events in competitive powerlifting. They also jog, do cardiovascular exercises and vigorous training with heavy objects that weigh as much as 455 kilograms.

In 1999, Mr. Girard placed fourth in the World Strongest Man competition in Malta. That year, he won the 1999 Canadian strongman contest and came first in the World Muscle power event in Scotland.

Born in Ste-Anne-de-Portneuf, Que., in 1971, Mr. Girard began training at age five when his father gave him a set of one-kilogram weights. Now he trains five to six times a week at a gym.

"Hugo is still a constable with the Gatineau police, but he is on a leave of absence during the competitions," said Mr. Girard's agent Wayne Culkin. "He is extremely popular with the kids and does a lot of shows sponsored by DeWalt power tools."

The Canadian Strongman series he produces has been a ratings hit on TSN sports television network.
