Questioning references...A Question

I know this is basic knowledge to most of the vets on the board, but if I'm going to learn and research something, I like to go all out and gather as much info as possible.

QUESTION: If you think you have a source and have asked for references, are they certain questions/facts that one should ask to help you determine if the source is legit or not?

i learned the hard way most good sources are backed by mods or vets of a particular board, so make sure they can give you atleast one well known mod or long time member that can back the source.

exactly.

But first, start by asking the references how many times they have used the source, how they got his name, and who they checked him out with.

Many times disreputable sources will stack their reference list to make it look better. I was on a reference list for a guy I had only used once. I would tell the few people that checked with me (yes, i've used, but only once). The fact that a one-time user ends up ono the reference list should be a red flag.
