Two new steroids that are not readily detectable by current drug testing methods have angered sports and government officials, who say the companies marketing them are skirting the law to sell dangerous drugs over the counter as dietary supplements.
Congress banned all known steroids in 1990 after hearing testimony about their health effects and rampant abuse in sports. However, two new steroids called 1-testosterone and 4-hydroxy testosterone escaped mention in the legislation because they were virtually unknown. Because the manufacturers claim that these are natural substances, the steroids have been marketed as dietary supplements.
Drug Enforcement Administrations Office of Diversion Control ...”The new drugs are anabolic steroids that can produce very significant adverse effects in humans. On top of that they are available to anyone.” Because tests have not been developed to detect these drugs, even athletes in sports that ban steroids might be able to use them without getting caught. The International Olympic Committee, National Football League, and National Collegiate Athletic Association ban steroids and test their athletes. The National Hockey League and Major League Baseball do not.
Since the mid 1990’s, supplement manufacturers have use a legal loop-hole to sell another type of otc steroid product known as steroid precursors. Steroid precursors convert to illegal steroids only after ingested. The two new steroids are considered more potent than precursors because they do not require such a conversion in the body. They were recently discovered by two US scientists who are considered leaders in the dietary and supplement industry.
Don Catlin, head of the IOC accredited laboratory at UCLA in Las Angeles, said he has recently become aware of 1-testosterone and 4-hydroxy testosterone, and considered them equivalent to “designer steroids.” There are no tests for either substances, although Catlin has begun developing them.
The first of the new steroids discovered was marketed as 1-testosterone, by Patrick Arnold of LPJ Research and Ergopharm in Seymore Illinois just over a year ago. Arnold marketed the steroid only in its pre-cursor form and called it 1-AD. It is 7x more anabolic than testosterone and has been sold as a pro-steroid by many other companies. The other new steroid, 4-hydroxy testosterone was discovered by William Lewellyn of Molecular Nutrition in Jupiter Florida.
Though pro-steroids did’nt exist a year ago, there are now dozens of products containing the compounds. “There’s a multitude of products; you can’t keep track of all of them”, Arnold said. “It’s an industry of people trying to get an edge on everyone else.” Lets not kid ourselves. 1-testosterone is an actual steroid, and we have entered a whole new realm of supplementation. The FDA is currently taking steps to add these steroids to the controlled substances list.

Approximately 3 months ago, congress introduced a bill that would BAN ALL PRECURSOR STEROIDS, PRO-HORMONES, and STEROIDS THAT WERE CURRENTLY NOT BEING ADDED TO THE CONTROLLED III LIST OF ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES AVAILABLE TO ATHLETES & THE PUBLIC. Unfortunately, it seems that our wonderful congressman are working to make themselves look good without any real research into banning these products. As usual, the pharmaceutical companies are playing their two faced games again, trying to imply that these substances are very dangerous and need to be taken off the market immediately. Unfortunately, the average person who hears this eats up everything they say. A good person doesn’t want anyone to get hurt, so the pharmaceutical companies play on this concern. They convince them that these supplements are very dangerous and get them to have a very uneducated opinion about the whole industry. Next thing you see is the Pharmaceutical companies taking every step to ban the supplement and make it a prescription. To save you? No way. It sells...they want it. Notice that there is never any concern to ban any supplements until they sell. It has been my experience that if a supplement sells extremely well for a period of 5 years straight, all of a sudden the drug companies want it, and claim it is dangerous, even though there has been absolutely NOTHING to suggest this except hear say and manipulated research. Pro-hormones and Pro-steroids are absolute proof of this corruption in the US. Although they have never harmed anyone to date, they have increased in sales year by year. All of a sudden there is a law introduced by congress claiming they need to be prescribed and controlled?? It doesn’t make sense. Where is the evidence to support these claims. What we at Researchkits.com have proven consistently is that it is just all about making money by the drug companies. It has nothing to do with concern for you. It is just amazing to us that it is ok to sell cigarettes to anyone 18 years of age or older in the US, yet congress claims that once you are 18 you are an adult and are able to know the decisions you make. If you choose to smoke and end up with cancer, that’s ok. Your an adult, and you make your own decisions. Yet doesn’t it seem very funny that congress does not hold the same thinking with supplements and hormones. They are dangerous and they need to make them controlled substances--yet smoking is dangerous, but you are old enough to decide?? Its a double standard. Unfortunately money dictates everything and the drug industry in the US is probably the most corrupt anywhere in the world, and WILL GET THEIR WAY!

Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about the corruption of the medical community in the United States. All we can do is try to prevent it from happening. We are in constant contact with our lawyers about the current bill in congress which is going to ban the sale of 1-testosterone, 1-4add, and 5-aplha. They constantly are telling us that we are not helping them??? I can’t get over that..... they (FDA) are asking us to discontinue the sales of our hormones because they feel that the laws will go through within the year, and if we were good minded people we would do this. Yeah, right..... WE WILL NEVER DO THIS!! IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO SMOKE CIGARETTES IN THE US, THAN YOU DEFFINATELY HAVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE HORMONES. All we can say to you is that we are posting this because we are under a lot of pressure to discontinue the sales of these products. We have discussed everything with our lawyers, and we will continue to sell all the products until the laws say we cannot. We feel you have the right to make your own choices and we will not be intimidated by uneducated, illegal threats by anyone. We are a law abiding company and only wish to provide top quality service to you. We felt that it was important to let you know the situation regarding many of the products we are selling. We have no idea how long we will be able to continue to sell the hormones, but what we are sure of is that CONGRESS IS SET ON PASSING THE ARTICLE TO BAN ALL THESE HORMONES WITHIN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, AND WE ARE SURE IT IS GONG TO GO THROUGH, SO YOU CAN GO AHEAD AND ADD 1-test, 5-alpha, 4-alpha, 5diol, 4diol, andro, 1,4add...etc to GHB, GBL, ANABOLIC STEROIDS, TRIAX, CLENBUTEROL, LIPOKINETIX, etc.... all of which are now controlled, and the hormones are definitely following the same path.
