  • over 50 grams of protine is a waste?????

i was talking to my old rommie who is a dietition ...........she seems to belive....( she said she has this in some of her books) that most people can only digest 45-50 g protine in one sitting....
she said anyhting mor and yrou body cant use it fast enough.....

i know some of you guys have posted yoru diets that have you eating more that 50 g in one sitting....

soooo the question is do you think this claim has merit?

    oppions please

First problem is she's reading out of a text book......

No one really knows. Taking in ginger root enhances protein absorbtion, thus more protein absorbed in one sitting. If its something like casein which forms a gel on the stomach lining and takes awhile to digest, you can handle a good amount. I wouldnt take in over 50 grams of whey at a time however. But animal proteins are questionable and no one really knows because it differes from person to person. But like I said, things like ginger root will help.

agreed. If it's Whey Protein, I only use ~25g, except for after workouts when it's 50g. I don't really mind if some of it gets converted to glucose after a workout. Meat however is a different story. I would maybe go as high as 75g every two hours. I still keep it lower though. If you're eating as often as you should, you shouldn't need to consume more than 50g in one sitting

                very true football.

And Tim, that book is fairly accurate. However, bodybuilders are NOT most people. We can digest a lot more protein than the average girlscout beucase thats what our bodies demand becuase of size and physical activity.

I still only think it can digest limited amounts. Yes, it may adjust somewhat to all the protein we keep throwing at it at one time. But trust me, for one, your body doesn't NEED 300+ grams of protein a day. Two, the physiology of the stomach is an entity in its own. Just because your muscles may want more protein (and again, read the above statement), that doesn't mean your stomach will magically be like "ok, lets start digesting BOAT LOADS of protein"

Trust you? Ha, what are your certifications again? So Im a 225lb man, and I dont need 300 grams of protein? Hahaha, riiiiiight. Be careful of who you get your facts from. I take in well over 350 grams of protein a day, no stomach irritation, no GI problems. Key is drinking water.

                        YJ,
I think his point was your body doesn't NEED it. Would you die if you stopped taking 300 grams of protein? No. could you build muscle on 150 grams a day? Yes. If you lowered you protein intake would you be MAXIMIZING your efforts? No. The body NEEDS very little protein to survive. The body NEEDS larger amounts to grow muscle; and finally it NEEDS even larger amounts to maximize that muscle growth. Anyway, that's how I read AnotherUser's post.

I don't know anyone educated in this area that would say you could digest unlimited quantities of protein at a time. So, obviously there is a limit. The question is simply, what is the limit. On that, there appears to be disagreement.

I weigh 215-220 and I "try" to eat 6-7 meals per day each containing 50-60 grams of protein (so total between 300 and around 400). But that's just what works best for me.

Thats a very moot point. This is a bodybuilding and fitness board, I think it can be assumed we're talking about not your everyday person, but bodybuilders. You may be able to grow on 150 grams of protein, I sure cant. Im not trying to 'just survive', Im a bodybuilder, Im trying to grow, thus the 300+ grams of protein.

No one is saying you can take in unlimited amounts, and no one will ever agree on a set amount, because there is no set amount.

                            YJ,
I don't know what you want by credentials, but I'll offer this:

Junior Nutrition Major at the University of Florida

Been researching everything on nutrition I could find for the past 5 years.

If you want credentials about my intelligence in general I'll provide, but they won't necessarily be related to human nutrition.

I seriously don't believe you need more than 300g a day of protein. I don't know about someone who is say 270+, but at 225 I seriouly doubt you need over 300g of protein. I personally try and hit 300+ a day, just because carbs make me fat (shitty genetics) and I prefer not to eat rediculous amounts of fat. A little extra can't hurt, but I don't think it's necessary. Your right, there is no set amount for any one person, but you have to make a generalization SOMEWHERE.

Basically, I feel that if you eat large amounts of protein in one sitting, gluconeogenesis occurs and a large portion of it gets converted to glucose. I personally stay leaner if I allow my body to make a larger portion of my glucose than if I consume it via other carbs.
