Some people get away with it. Personally I wouldn't fuck with myself like that, but thats just me.

In the 4g kit for example that you get from Researchkits you don't even get a bottle with opened top so you can put your funnel in with a coffee filter.

You get two bottles with rubber tops (one with oil, one empty) and a bottle with the solvent that has open top.

So were are you supposed to put your funnel into?

I've done with and without filter in the past. No difference to me. As long as you get that crystal clear yellowish solution.

I think that as long as you let it sit for long enough to seperate the fina mix from the glue residue and don't pick up that whitish stuff from the bottom into your mix - you are going to be fine. You still need to filter it through Whatman filter - this is a must!

I know - by letting it go through the coffee filter you probably get additional .5 ml - so what?! That's only half of one shot anyway.
This stuff is cheap and you can afford it.

I dont see the point in skipping it since it only takes a few minutes to do, and u dont wanna clog ur sterile filter either

in the old days ....before kits .....people didn't filter or separate the binders.....there's no reason not to .....

The only reason to prefilter the mix in a coffee filter is to squeeze out some extra fina from that gooey stuff.

If you leave that portion alone you just need to filter the "good" rest of the mix with Whatman. Whatman stoppes smaller calliber particles than coffee filter in my understanding, so anything that goes through the Whatman would go through coffee filter as well anyway.

So why do it twice if you can do it once with the same end result?
