  • Question about corticosteroids receptors, please awnser

My dad has a disease and the doctor gave him a cortico steroid Hydrocortisone Acetate. I'd like to know how bad they shut down the natural testosterone production. It's known to lower test level but, I would like to know how bad it'll shut him down. It's medically alright to give a corticosteroid that gives more than a shit load of side effects without even a script for something to help to counter side effect. But hey, do not even think about giving some anabolic shit, it'll kill him. I begin to wonder what's wrong with the system.

    What is Hydrocortisone (HCT)?

Hydrocortisone Acetate also known as Cortisol, is a very popular and frequently used steroid which is normally produced in the body by the adrenal glands. It is an extremely safe and effective anti-inflammatory agent for external use only. Marketed and commonly advertised as a mild but highly effective over-the-counter medication, it is primarily used for the temporary relief of itching, minor irritations, allergies and rashes of the skin.

I assume your dad is not taking high doses of the cortisol, and It shouldn't shut him down. I would just consult with your doctor, thats not really something you want to ask the people on this board. This is your dad's life were talking about.

I'm not saying you shouldn't had said it but... I know it's a bit personal but well, no one knows my dad here. He has a inherit (not sure of the word, it means the disease is running in the family) desease. It's ulcerative colitis. He's taking 90mg hydrocortisone acetate anally per dose. And well, he's taking more than one dose per day. His disease is very agressive. But he can avoid surgery since the infected part isn't too big. So, could you give me more information since you know all this.

Oh well, I was just asking if the binded receptors will send the chimical messengers to the gona axis (sp) therefore shutting him down. There's a very little info available for me, and I speak french so it makes it even harder to understand all the cortico receptors stuff when it's written in english.

I did a search on pubmed, and came up with nothing, in fact, i didnt even see a reference to it lowering testerone. Cortisol of course is not good for muscle growth, but im unsure if it affects testerone.

          listen

trust me... that amount of shutdown you'll get from a topical steroid that isn't even anabolic is so minimal it won't make a bit of difference if he's trying to gain size. the tiny amount that does get through the skin has such low affinity to testosterone receptors it'll do almost nothing anabolic so it won't shut down the fsh/lh - test axis, b/c it's hardly acting as if test would. if you want further detail pm me or log onto www.mdconsult.com and set up a temporary 10 day account and search on your own. it's the site all docs use and is basically a huge database of books and journal articles.
