Unlike the IPF, the Raw Unity Powerlifting Championships does not have a specific set of measurements that it adheres to when determining which neoprene knee sleeves to allow and which to forbid. The IPF states that a neoprene knee sleeve cannot exceed 7mm in thickness and 30cm in length. Raw Unity simply states that “only knee sleeves made of one ply neoprene are permitted. Specifically, these are the only knee sleeves allowed at the RUPC…” (and then the approve knee sleeves are simply listed in no specific order). Raw Unity cannot speak to the motivation as to why the IPF allows what it does; but in the beginning Raw Unity was not going to allow anything at all to be worn on the knees. However, after lengthy discussion from committee members as well as many top lifters that had plans to come to the first Raw Unity a compromise was reached and the intention of allowing the knee sleeves was so that the lifter could keep the knees warm and in doing so perhaps have more safety and confidence when squatting maximal weights.
