What are the purpose of these? I see it mainly used in powerlifting, but I was just curious as to what it does?

      Re: Bench press boards

Im guessing youre referring to a large block of wood on your chest for benching...well, the biomechanics of bench pressing is/can be very damaging..most sports dont require the upper arm to go back so far ie football, boxing, etc...most movements in sports are with the arms out in front of you...this is why a lot of NFL linemen bench with a block of wood on their chest..its just a more natural movement and builds strength where you need it most

        Re: Bench press boards

I wasn't too worried about using one or anything. We were just talking about it and I was curious. Anyone have any tips on correct form? Links to videos or anything? I know that correct form will actually make it easier to lift. I am curious to know if I use the correct form?

it's alot like doing rack pulls instead of the full deadlift but for bench, allows greater weight to be handled which in itself helps with strength and control.

Board presses are used to help you get stronger on your lock out for powerlifting. It targets your triceps and helps get by your sticking point. J.R.

I know this post is very old and I hope you got your answer but these guys aren't steering straight bud. Bench press boards are a critical tool for PLrs trying to improve their lockout. Todays bench shirts make it so the first few inches off the chest are really more about the shirt and form than anything else but once you get 4-8" off your chest the shirt stops helping you as much and you better have a strong lockout to keep that shit moving. Another benefit is it gives your CNS a taste of holding heavier weight than you are used to and more than you'd be able to bench. I work with boards at least once a week and i cycle them from 5 boards down to the chest over the course of 5 weeks and then I ad more weight and repeat.

It's a totally different exercise once you throw a shirt on it's really more about mastering a new technique than anything else. The biggest thing I notice when wearing a shirt (besides the extreme pain, lol) is that lowering the weight is mostly done by letting the shirt do it's thing and I get to worry more about leg drive, my lats, traps and holding my shoulder blades together and just blasting the shit out that bar once you touch. I just got a new shirt and I couldn't get 455lbs to touch in it.

Absolutely! The movement itself changes and the way you train changes. They're a lot of fun and I toss in some equipped training from time to time but since I train alone I stick with raw.

I guess I dont understand the point of using a bench shirt or an assisted lift. I mean I guess its cool to say you did 200 more pounds but I just dont understand how that ever came to being used I guess.
