When you bench, do you grip the bar completely or do you just rest the bar on your palms? I think I know what you're going to say...Just want to make sure since you train like I do; pwrlftr style...
I squeeze the hell out of it. It was put to me like this by Jim Wendler: Make a fist as tight as you possible can. What happened? Your body became tight right? This is what you need to do to help stay tight in the bench.
Makes sense to me, not to mention the fact that I've seen people who use the thumbless grip have the weight roll and crash down on em. That's gotta suck!

But Benching has a lot more to do than just grip...Having a great strong back is what helps the most...I always push the bar without a strong grip...I feel as if my strength vanishes...I just rest the bar on the palm of my hand...I also lift at 80% of max all the time with low reps...

Yeah, but you were askin about my grip. For a strong bench you deffinately need strong lats, triceps, delts and pecs. When you set up for the bench there are many factors that come into play to get maximum power. You need a solid base with your foot position to maximize your leg drive, stability, arch (if you use one) and over all tightness (kinda like you're spring loaded). You need to squeeze the bar very tight which will help keep your entire body tight and ready to explode out of the hole. If you feel a decrease in strenght when you grip the bar tightly then you're prolly changing your form somewhat, forgeting your leg drive or not keeping your back tight. Once you practice your set up and really get your form dialed in, you'll notice a major increase in your strength.
