Re: Do bariatric surgery restrictions improve outcomes?
I actually give a talk about this, how it's easy to harvest and manipulate data so "centers" and hospitals can look wonderful. Even the quality parameters for doctors. For instance, Mayo Clinic does not take Medicare/medicaid and has never been altruistic towards the uninsured, historically the elderly, the poorest and uninsured are the sickest populations. THus, their "data" for outcomes looks really good because they don't take careo of some of the sickest people! In fact, every mayo clinic chief resident I interviewed I would not hire because not a single one of them has treated really really sick AIds and people with sickle cell crisis. I can't count on them to take call for me at night if a Aids seizure with cryptococcus meningitis and PCP pneumonia comes through the door with a sickle cell chest wall crisis ( the latter has 50% mortality). They can't begin to think of diagnsosing and treating in a matter of a few minutes....
