  • Popular acne drug linked to causing mental health problems, yet wildly over-prescribed

NaturalNews) It is one of the most popular medications available for people with severe acne. But Roaccutane (isotretinoin), also known as Accutane in the U.S., is being increasingly linked to causing depression, suicidal tendencies, and even sexual identity confusion among people who take it. And this connection has prompted a cohort of doctors and concerned citizens to call for serious action to be taken against the drug, which has been linked to numerous suicides in recent years.

Originally developed by the Switzerland-based pharmaceutical giant Roche as a chemotherapy drug, Roaccutane is commonly prescribed to young people who suffer from overactive sebaceous glands, which are responsible for producing natural oils in the face -- too much of these oils leads to acne. But what many people taking this powerful drug do not realize is the fact that Roaccutane can severely alter their moods and personalities as well, sometimes for many years after stopping the treatment.

This is what happened to 24-year-old Jesse Jones, who back in 2011 was found dead at the bottom of a cliff. Based on evidence gathered following the young man's death, it became clear that Jesse suffered severe mental side effects as a result of taking Roaccutane, side effects that he documented privately as causing him to completely lose interest in women, which was apparently very distressing for him. He also wrote in an email that never got sent to his parents that Roaccutane "changed the way [his] mind and body work[ed]."

You can read Jesse's tragic story here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

String of suicides among young people tied to Roaccutane use

Many others have suffered similar, fatal side effects as a result of taking Roaccutane. 18-year-old Melissa Martin-Hughes, for instance, reportedly hanged herself back in 2010 after spiraling into severe depression following an intense regimen of Roaccutane. And 28-year-old Angela Lee willfully stepped in front of a train after being mentally raped by the side effects of Roaccutane.

"Roaccutane is grossly overused. I've seen patients who have been to see a local dermatologist to treat four or five spots and still been offered it," said Dr. Tony Chu, a dermatologist, to the U.K's Telegraph about the gross over-prescription of Roaccutane. Dr. Chu is one of many who is outraged about how widely and easily this potent drug is being prescribed, and is now calling for an urgent change. "If you read the guidelines, [Roaccutane] should only be used for people who have severe acne."

As expected, Roche, the drug's manufacturer, denies that Roaccutane is linked in any way to causing depression or thoughts of suicide. And yet at the same time, the package insert for Roaccutane explains that the drug can indeed cause these and various other severe side effects in some patients.

Yes, need more evidence, but these kinds of things don't surprise me. I've seen people's personality change as a result of other pharmaceuticals.

ive been taking accutane since it came out in 1982 and yes it causes depression, bone aches, whole bunch of shit but its very safe if you use low dosages. nice post baby, but fuzo got point more doulble blind studies need to be performed. i take 10mg capsules by roche labs all yr round. no problems here. i took over 40 courses at least.

these are people with bad cases taking more then 120mg ed . yes colitis all that but as we age just do 10- 20 mg ed and it will work just as good. but yes at high doses there is all those problems. i just telling you i got nothing at 80 mg when younger to 10 mg now and nothing but depression at high doses, bones felt brittle and such. but nothing but dry lips at 10 mg caps.

unclem is right, more studies need to be done. Don't forget, teenagers with acne ( especially moderate to severe) already have a higher rate of psychiatric issues. This is called in clinical medicine, a underlying confounding bias.

                Cliff note synopsis of studies.

                1. Retrospective ( look back studies that don't control variables) studies have failed to demonstrate a clear relationship between isotretinoin and depression.

2.Available prospective studies ( looking forward) have lacked the power to identify such a positive or negative association. ( studies were done with 250 - 300, you need at least 1000 to have the power define it as a culprit or innocent of causing depression). FOx news reported that it did not cause depression but cited a small study of 250. ( another reason I distrust Fox).

Large randomised double bllinded prospective studies are difficult to carry out as retinoic acid is so much more effective than say antibiotics in terms of how it erradicates the acne and it's side effects while taking it. ( dry skin, flaking skin etc.)

i could no way take 80mg of accutane at my age now. it would be to hard on my body. i read in ne journal of medicine, that accutane could cause degenerative disc disease but its just needs to be more studies to confirm this. i think the drug is a true mircle drug for acne at low dosages or higher at young age kids. but the mental scars of acne can be worse then the disease itself. i pay real good attention as to what a drug is doing to my body . but iam not a scientist like bandaidwoman is.
