  • A Must-Have Food Item for Your Medicine Cabinet

Scientific researchers are starting to figure out what alternative medicine followers have known for centuries: Honey heals.

The most recent evidence comes from a European study published in International Wound Journal that evaluated the effectiveness of floral honey as a wound treatment. Over a two-year span, the study looked at 121 patients living with hard-to-treat wounds. Patients reported less pain when usingMediHoney wound dressings as a secondary treatment. These honey bandages are marketed for use on skin ulcerations, burns, and surgical incisions. Doctors found 53 percent using the New Zealand–made honey bandages saw improvement in wound healing, and 31 percent healed completely.

Honey works on superficial scrapes, scratches, and burns, too. About two dozen studies out of New Zealand show that honey's healing power includes natural antibacterial agents. In fact, honey packs a three-way punch when it comes to knocking out wounds. Its sugar absorbs moisture, robbing bacteria of the environment they need to survive. Honey's hydrogen peroxide content naturally disinfects, while the propolis in the nectar targets lingering bacteria.
One study found that when treated with honey, burns healed in 11 days—four days sooner than burns treated without honey. The sweet substance also reduces swelling and reduces scarring. To give honey's healing powers a try, stock your medicine cabinet with a bottle or tube of Manuka honey from New Zealand, such as Manuka Honey USA. When needed, put the honey on a sterile gauze, apply it to the wound, and change the dressing every 24 hours until you've healed
