  • Male birth control pills on the way

Long considered a scientific pipe dream, it appears as though we are closer than ever before to the future of male birth control.
Researchers at New York’s Columbia University have developed the drug, which apparently allows its user to temporarily stop sperm production, with no side-effects whatsoever.
Unlike previous attempts to find male contraception solution, the pill contains no steroids (which have been the cause of a number of long-term side effects, including impotence) and scientists are now planning the first long-term test studies on humans. Thus far successful trials have only been conducted on mice, who are notorious for their anti-safe sex views.
Dr Wendy Chung of Columbia has said of the findings: ‘An additional benefit of our compound is that it can be taken orally as a pill, avoiding the injection process.
‘It also appears to have a very rapid effect on sperm production and an even more rapid recovery when fertility is desired.
‘We hope that in the not-so-distant future, we may finally have more choices for people.’
If it's good enough for rampant, randy mice in long-term relationships, it sounds good enough for us. There's been no definite time frame for the beginning of human trials, however, so it looks like men won't be getting to utter the immortal line, "Oh god! I forgot to take my pill!" until a few years from now at least.
