  • Keeping up with body fat?

What do you guys use to keep track of your BF%? I have a set of calipers at home but I usually get a different reading every time I use them. Now I'm sure that it is just me not doing it correctly or what not, but if I can't do it the same way every time, then how consistent can it be? There are electronic devices that you can use, but you must be consistent in use with those as well. I just want something to tell me if I'm losing or not. I'm not really that concerned with how much I am at the moment. I just want something that will allow me to see if I'm losing or not. Once I start getting close to my goal, then I will obviously want to know a more accurate reading. What do you guys think of this

It's fairly cheap and as long as I used it at the same time of day, with the same amount of clothes, etc....it should give me a good reading as far as loss or gain, right? Or should I just stick with the calipers? If so, is there like a link to a video that shows the correct way to use them?

Not sure how accurate it is, but for that price, its worth taking a chance on it. Compare the findings with other tests, like calipers. If it gives consistent answers, that are consistent day after day. Some testers are so crappy that one day it will have you at 10% BF and then the next day, you might be 6% or 13%. Then you know you have a bunk bf tester. Ive used a Futrex, which uses infra red. Its pretty consistent, but I know some people who are consistent with a cheap set of calipers

I have read a review of this one from a pretty reputable guy on IA and he says that it is fairly accurate as long as you are consistent in using it. I may give it a shot since it's pretty cheap

Let us know how that thing works for you. Maybe I will buy one. Heck, for $28 you cant go wrong. If it works good, then that is a bargain

Well, it will be longer than I expected. After I made the purchase, I received an email from my credit card company telling me that someone tried to use my card at TF Supplements ECOM or something for like 800.00!! So the amazon charge will not go through until I place the order again.

This just getting crazy! I really think I am going to pay the card off and get rid of all of my credit cards. I hate having to worry about buying anything over the internet anymore.

Re: Keeping up with body fat?

I have used them all cause I worked at the recreation and wellness center back in college and we had access to like 4-5 different kinds of devices that we had to be trained how to use. Personally I like just a pair of spring loaded calipers, but u have to get someone else to do it and make sure it is on the same side of your body every time. Also, u need to let the calipers sink in for a sec then re-pinch them while holding your skin to get a more accurate reading. You really do have to squeeze the skin pretty tight with your hand though. Its also better to get the same person to do the reading each time as well just to keep it consistent. Ive used the laser ones and an automatic electronic caliper. The hand held one you are looking at should be consistent which is good but it always has given me slightly higher reading I think. Anyway consistency is the key. Calipers i think are the most accurate when u use a 7 or 9 point test, esp if you are leaner than say 15%. If you are over 15% (for guys) the electronic ones seem to work better IMO as it can be hard to get an accurate caliper reading on a large fat roll.

Re: Keeping up with body fat?

I have 2 methods of checking my bodyfat level.

One of my doctors have a scale that lets you know what you weigh overall, bodyfat weight & ratio, and body weight minus water & fat (muscle only).

I also use a bodyfat caliber at the gym that you grip with your hands to read.

What sucks is that, according to the latter, I've lost almost 120 lbs. but only 8% bodyfat.
