  • "Quick" Protein

    My dilemma..

I typicially consume a protein shake 20-30 before lifting and directly afterwards, along with a carb. Sometimes I wonder if I should take in a natural protein source post workout rather than a shake, simply because my only protein source for 2-3 hours is coming from the shake. Is everybody else in the same boat or are there some "quick" natural protein sources that will jump into the bloodstream with the same effect as a shake? Been going back and forth on this one for years....

    Eager to hear your responses...

Thanks for the replies. When I say 2-3 hours, I mean from the time I take my pre-workout shake to the time I take my post workout shake (right after lifting). It's usually around 2 hours. I like the idea of casien at night. I need to invest in some....

            Re: "Quick" Protein

Whey protein is considered a faster absorbing protein is more quickly assimilated than solid food and gets into your muscles faster.
Whey is what's known as a "fast" protein, meaning that it's digested quickly, while milk protein (casein) is what's known as a "slow" protein, meaning it's digested relatively slowly. At night, you want your protein to be metabolized slowly so that your body gets a more even supply over the course of the night. By mixing "fast" and "slow" proteins, you get the benefits of the higher-quality whey with the slower digestion time of the milk.
