When you start a weight loss program, why do you gain weight at first instead of losing it?
Your body undergoes many changes as you start an exercise program. One of these changes is an increase in “total body water”. Let me explain why this happens. During exercise, your working muscles create heat. This heat must be dissipated and sweating generally ensues. This moistens the skin allowing for evaporation, cooling the skin. This water your body uses for perspiration must be replaced. Additionally, your body will begin to hold on to more water (mostly in the blood stream) in anticipation of future exercise. This additional water can contribute a few pounds over the first few weeks.
One other source of initial weight gain is from stored sugar called glycogen. When your muscles burn glycogen during exercise, it activates enzymes that work to replace that glycogen. If everything goes well, you will end up with more glycogen stored in your muscles than you started with. This too can add a few pounds of body weight initially. Bottom line; don’t worry about the initial weight gain. It is by design and will only help you reach your weight loss goals in the end (no pun intended).
