  • Energy question??

My GF has been working out with a trainer that she knows for little while now. She has been getting really tired lately and seems to stay tired all of the time. Her trainer told her that she needs to eat more protein and that is probably why she feels this way. I told her that I thought it was from her caloric intake and that she needed to eat more calories since she has cut calories to try and lose weight.

Do you guys think that either of these are the problem? She gets enough rest but I just don't think she is eating enough.

    Re: Energy question??

I'm hesitant to give you advice in case she's feeling tired due to some kind of medical condition. But if not, and it's due to her dieting it's probably related to her glycogen stores. A few mistakes commonly made by people that are trying to lose weight are:

    1) Cutting too much fat out of your diet (some fat is necessary for hormone production)
    2) Poor nutrition pre and post work out. She does need some protein before and after, if she's worried about it making her fat (my girlfriend used to think protein was more fattening than carbs) just run the math by her. 1 scoop of protein is usually about 120 Kcal that's the same Kcal as 1 glass of milk, 1 slice of bread, etc.....
    3) Not enough carbs, especially in relation to her work out. It's important to get some carbs first thing in the morning to replenish your liver glycogen stores from a long night of fasting while you're asleep. It's important to have carbs after a work out to replenish muscle glycogen. Both morning and post work out carbs should be mixed (simple and complex) and the rest of the day should only be complex.

If she's worried about gaining weight by eating properly let her know that reducing her Kcal too much will actually slow her metabolism down and the second she eases up on her diet she'll gain everything and more back. Also explain that's it's about numbers and even if she consumes all the Kcal she used while working out with her pre and post work out nutrition, she's still ahead of the game because working out speeds your metabolism up for hours to come.

Sorry for the lengthy reply. If you need me to be more specific and or have any questions I'd be more than happy to help you out.

      Re: Energy question??

It could be one of many things. If she has med coverage a basic CBC (complete blood count) would tell a lot.
Without further info would leave me writing a laundry list of possible causes.

Not enough info but another possibility could be if she is working out every day her CNS could be completely fried. It may be as simple as taking a short break altogether.
But as firstenery stated, it could be a huge list of things.

            Re: Energy question??

Thanks guys. Well she was never really tired until she started working out and watching what she ate, or at least that is when she started complaining about it. She only works out like 3-4 days a week.

I will show her this post but I really think that "ILOVEDEADLIFTS" hit it on the button. The person she works out with is a a trainer and used to bodybuild, so I would think that she is in good hands but she just comes home and complains about it all of the time. I figured I would post it up here and see what you guys thought.
